I've always enjoyed flowers. Who doesn't? But in my family having a green thumb is a thing. My grandma always had plants in her home, she cultivated a garden, and her backyard in Miami showcased trees and plants from her home in Jamaica. I grew up climbing her avocado tree. I'd pluck ackee when they opened and take them inside for her to cook for breakfasts. So when we found out we'd be stationed in Maryland, I knew I was going to be able to check off shooting the Cherry Blossom festival off my "D.C. Must Do" list. As it turned out, Yazmin had the same line item on her to do list. So when she reached out and asked that we work together for her maternity session to be set at the Cherry Blossom Festival this year, I was all in.
As it turns out, our plans were easily said and more challenging to execute. D.C. is not a play-play city. It's not an 'oh, it won't be that crowded' type of place. It is a vibrant and constantly bustling environment. People are vying for space, whether that's living space, parking spaces, or an ideal spot to shoot these wondrous blossoms. After weeks of patient planning, and Yazmin kindly talking me off the ledge more than once, we chose a date during peak bloom and set out to make the best of the cold and crowds. We had a great time!
Let's discuss these blossoms - it cannot be overstated that they are phenomenally beautiful. Stunning. I've not shot anywhere that rivals the sumptuous beauty of these blooms. And after weeks of planning, I'm so proud to share these images with you. This shoot represents my first in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area, and I can't think of any location in the area more iconic to have gotten my feet wet shooting in our new community. I hope you enjoy viewing these as much as I enjoyed shooting them, and I can't wait to go back next year and start the tedious (but totally worth it) process of planning another Cherry Blossom Festival maternity session.
